Based on Apple’s 2022 event, here is a simple explanation on what makes the new iPhone 14 series so unique.

It’s that time of year again for the annual Apple Event where the company highlights its latest smartphone, apps, watches and AirPods. This year’s event featured the new iPhone 14 series which includes the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone Pro and iPhone Pro Max. GearBrain tuned into the event and here is what we learned.

The iPhone 14 comes with larger displays and the new operating system, iOS 16. The displays are 6.1 inches for the iPhone 14 and 6.7 inches for iPhone 14 Plus. Both updated designs included Apple’s OLED display with Dolby Vision. They use aerospace titanium case to help protect the iPhone’s ceramic glass shield. It uses the new A15 bionic chip with 5 core GPU for better privacy and security. It is faster than previous iPhone models because of its 6 core CPU and 16 core neural CPU. But like previous models, the iPhone 14 features a new camera system which is designed to help you take the best pictures no matter what type of light is present. The cameras include a 12MP main camera with a large sensor and faster aperture. It can provide 49% improvement in your photos in low light and has ultra-wide capabilities.

The iPhone 14 front camera features auto focus and a hybrid system for better selfies.

For all photos, the new iPhone 14 has made improvements for low light situations. The large sensor and intelligent software with deep fusion and a neural engine can capture more colors in low light. Thus, making the images brighter. According to Apple, this system is 2x better than the iPhone 13 camera system.

For video, the company made improvements by introducing their new advanced stabilization mode called Action Mode. This mode allows you to take videos while moving and can keep the video stable. It can provide the same type of videos you would get if you had a gimble. The new Action Mode is great for movie makers or anyone who likes to take action shots while moving around.

Regarding connectivity, Apple introduced the first 5G smartphone that doesn’t need a physical SIM card. They have eliminated the SIM Card tray from the phone. They are using the new eSIM, a digital SIM card. This new digital card will allow you to upgrade your iPhone without using a Wi-Fi connection. AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile are accepting eSIM Cards.

In addition to the eSIM card, the iPhone 14 comes with Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via Satellite. The Emergency SOS via Satellite service uses communication satellites to help contact emergency services when needed, especially if you are off the grid or have poor cell connectivity. The iPhone 14 can guide you through using this service since it is very hard to connect to communication satellites. Though there are a lot of them up in space, they are constantly moving. This service is free to all iPhone 14 users for the next two years.

The cost of the iPhone 14 is $799 and is available for pre-order on 9/9 and shipped on 9/16. The iPhone 14 Plus costs $899 and is also available for pre-order on 9/9 but ships on 10/7. Colors are Midnight, Purple, Starlight, Product Red and Blue for both models.

iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max also have bigger displays and are more powerful than previous models. The screens are 6.1 inch for the 14 Pro and 6.7 inch for the Pro Max. They also provide a brighter picture thanks to the 1600 nits. They have a new camera system and sensor to provide new intuitive experiences.

One new feature of the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max is the Dynamic Island. This is located at the top of the display and expands to present info from apps or functions you are using with your iPhone. It’s an easy way to access certain functions and can help you control any hardware or software on your iPhone 14. This feature provides users with a new experience on the iPhone. Think of it as an “always on” display for you to do quick glances on your phone when needed.

The iPhone 14 Pro comes with the A16 bionic chip for more power and efficiency. The A16 is the falsest and most powerful chip for any Apple iPhone. It has a 6 core CPU for longer battery life and a 5-Core GPU for gamers. The new display provides dynamic images and brighter colors.

The camera system in the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max includes a 48MP main camera with a 65% larger sensor than previous models. The quad pixel sensor can get 4x more light thanks to a new pixel patter it uses to capture colors in low light. The 4k resolution can focus in 0.5x, 1x, 2x and 3x. The 2x telephoto setting uses Apple ProRAW for better control with the 48MP camera. For those of you who are not familiar with Apple ProRAW, it’s a special camera feature in Apple iPhone cameras, including the front cameras but not in portrait mode. Per Apple, “It combines the information of a standard RAW format along with iPhone image processing to offer additional creative control when you make adjustments to exposure, color, and white balance.”

There is also a 12MP Ultra-Wide camera on the back of the iPhone 14 along with a new flash to provide better focal length. And the camera provides 24 frames per second in 4K resolution.

The iPhone 14 Pro costs $999 and the Pro Max is $1,0999. Both are available for pre-order on 9/9 and ship on 9/16.

To recap, the iPhone 14 series comes with bigger displays, better camera systems, 5G, new chips for faster speeds and longer battery life and new apps and features to help keep you safe. The Crash Detection and Emergency SOS via Satellite are great security features to have in a smartphone today. And let’s not forget, Apple is committed to saving the planet. All their products are made of recyclable material which is good for the environment. We look forward to testing these new iPhones in the coming weeks to see how they really perform for individuals with an active connected lifestyle.
