LED Lights and LED Lighting products have revolutionized the lighting market by virtue of their long life, low energy consumption when compared with alternative lighting options, and form and fit replacement capabilities, enabling simple transitions to more energy efficient lighting options.

LED Lights are based on the use of semiconductor devices known as Light Emitting Diodes. This light is generated utilizing a semiconductor in a process called electroluminescence. An electrical current passes through a microprocessor which illuminates the small light source that is LED, which results in visible light. The heat produced by LEDs is absorbed into a heat sink. The small size and cooler operating temperature allow it to be used with multiple shapes and forms that would be otherwise impossible with traditional bulbs.

LED Lighting provides the light that’s considered 90% more efficient than the traditional incandescent light bulbs and has an exceptionally long lifespan.  Their longevity is 13 times more than the conventional incandescent bulbs and three times more compared to compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs. LEDs also have 80 percent higher energy efficiency than incandescent bulbs and 40 percent higher than CFL bulbs; which significantly lower the energy use and lower bills and lead to long-term savings.

The industry offers a large selection of LED lighting for residential, commercial, and industrial applications. As LED lighting technology continues to advance and emerge into more consumer-friendly applications, so does the growing popularity to their low heat emission, light color options, and sleeker designs.

This article provides an overview of the primary types of LED lights and LED lighting in use today. By LED lights, reference is being made to the bulbs themselves or the LED panels that generate the light output. The term LED lighting refers to lighting assemblies including fixtures, connectors, wiring, etc.

With recent advances in LED technology, we now have a wide range of styles, including tubes, reflectors, spotlights, GLS, candles, and golf balls.  The energy used for these styles varies, and the cost is also comparable with other light bulbs in the market and can provide significant savings in your utility bills. Here is a list of some of the different types of LED Bulbs:

LED bulbs come in numerous shapes and sizes. Here’s a list of some of the most common types:

LED Bulbs are available in a wide range of colors to include shades of white: Soft white, bright white, and daylight.

LED Bulbs have earned the ENERGY STAR certification and is a simple choice to save on your utility bills. Traditional incandescent light bulbs measure brightness in Watts while LED lights measure the brightness in Lumens.  For example, a conventional 60-Watt light bulb emits over 800 Lumens. An LED equivalent may only measure 8.5 Watts, but it will still emit 800 Lumens and provide the same brightness levels. 3

LED Lights have a long lifespan, with options rated with a minimum of 20,000 hours to over 50,000 hours of operations as the current standard. Some are even rated up to 90,000 hours. If used for a few hours a day, a fixture can last over 20 years.

LED Lighting provides energy-saving, longevity, high-quality color rendering lighting, which is driving today’s marketplace.  Suppliers are turning to LED lighting for general purpose, directional, decorative lighting, and a variety of other applications. Here are some popular LED applications and products:

The aviation industry utilizes a multitude of Aircraft LED applications. Products range from landing lights, taxi lights, and navigational/strobe lights, to the flight deck and cabin light fixtures. Aircraft LED lighting requires some of the most extreme operating conditions. Aircraft LED manufacturers focuses on efficiency, reliability, and natural lighting for landing and navigation that results in far better results than the traditional lighting system. Installation categories include but not limited to commercial and general aviation, military aircraft, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, and helicopters.

Grow LED lights are used for gardening when you require high-output LEDs that provide optimal light for seeding and houseplants, as well as herbs and other edibles. Grow lights assist in performing photosynthesis for plants, which is required for the plants to thrive. High-quality LEDs produce more photons (light particles) than the standard HID lights.  LED grow lights are excellent for plants as they give off very little heat.  They utilize only 50% of the energy and last five times longer than fluorescent bulbs.

Rope LED lighting has been in the market for some time now and can many used for many different purposes.  Essentially, it’s a long cylindrical tube housed with an internal light source placed a few inches apart to give the appearance of a “glowing” or “twinkling” effect.  Although, rope lighting can use both incandescent bulbs and LEDs bulbs, however, LEDs are most commonly used due to their flexibility of applications and longer lifespan.  They typically come in ½” diameter or 8/8” diameter tubes.  Rope lightings are best for decorative use only due to their low brightness and are not practical for any task or display lighting.

LED Strip lights or ribbon lights are built with a flexible circuit board populated by surface mounted LEDs that usually come with an adhesive backing.  Strip LEDs are designed as a low profile shape which allows for easy installation practically anywhere and cut to custom fit in any areas making them extremely flexible and adaptable lighting tool. Strip LEDs brightness and customizability allow for multiple applications ranging from kitchen cabinet lights, ceiling fluorescents, or office conference rooms.  LED strips can be controlled through wireless dimming systems, DMX controller and or wall switches.

Commercial spaces require super bright LEDs; therefore, commercial LEDs have retrofit kits replacing the fluorescent tubes with energy-saving LED tubes.  Upgrading to LED lighting for commercial areas such as parking lots, manufacturing warehouses or outdoor space, lessens the impact a business may have on the environment and saves on annual expenses and maintenance costs.

Industrial spaces also require super bring LEDs to illuminate the areas. Many Industrial LED manufacturers provide lighting solution that is designed to maximize energy savings while significantly reducing installation and maintenance cost. Industrial LEDs can seamlessly integrate with existing factory automation and building management system.  Some Industrial LED fixtures include High Bay, Area Light, Linear lighting, Floodlight, Wallpacks/Bulkheads, Street Lights, etc.

Portable or LED Workshop Lights are excellent for workshops, utility rooms, garages, and other commercial applications. The fixtures are designed and available in either suspension or surface mounted. LED shop lights are the environmentally friendly and budget-conscious solution to replacing the old incandescent or HID light fixtures.

Wet Location LED bulbs are required in both indoor and outdoor areas where space may be exposed environmentally to water. These wet LED bulbs are vapor tight light fixtures with protection against moisture. The three main categories for this type of fixtures are high-bay, linear, and jar fixtures.

Certain LED manufacturers have developed a series of LED drivers designed for high-temperature operation, capable of working at operating temperatures exceeding  176 Farenheight, without sacrificing efficiency, lifetime or physical size. Unique power architecture uses novel buffering and thermal management techniques to allow sustained and reliable operation in ambient temperatures of over 176 degrees.
