The smallest member of the BMW SUV family has undergone a generational redesign that has made it bigger and loaded it up with high-tech features. The 2023 BMW X1 arrives on dealer lots in the fourth quarter of 2022.

BMW's design team has given the X1 a body similar to that of the X3 and X5, continuing the tradition of keeping the company's boxier SUV's looks close. It has a pronounced front end, more traditional kidney grille than on the iX.

Its closest competitors are now and will continue to be the Volvo XC40, Audi Q3 and Cadillac XT4.

As shown in the 2023 BMW X1xDrive28i grade, the model wears 18-inch alloy wheels (19- and 20-inch wheels are available), standard LED headlights at all four corners, black trim, and a spoiler over the rear glass. Roof rails can be had in the standard Satin Aluminum or available Shadowline finish.

It is 1.7 inches longer, nearly an inch wider and 1.7 inches taller than the last-generation X1. Its track width has increased as well, giving the SUV a more brutish stance.

BMW will sell the model in the buyer's choice of Alpine White (non-metallic), Jet Black (non-metallic), Black Sapphire, Mineral White, Phytonic Blue, Portimao Blue, Storm Bay or San Remo Green exterior paint jobs.

Buyers can enhance the look of their car with the xLine package, which adds high-gloss body cladding, additional Satin Aluminum exterior trim, and Glacier Silver mirror caps. The kidney grille gets and upgrade with the package and is finished in pearl-effect chrome.

Each X1 xDrive28i SUV gets its power from a twin-turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that is revised for the new model year. It makes 241 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque (lb-ft). The engine is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The power plant moves the car from zero to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds.

Drivers can choose to drive in one of three drive modes: Personal Mode, Sport Mode, or Efficient Mode.

The M Sport Package bumps up the performance as well as the looks of the 2023 X1 delivering 18-inch M V-spoke bi-color alloy wheels, Adaptive M suspension, and Shadowline trim to the SUV's exterior. Sport seats, Aluminum Hexacube trim, and an M leather steering wheel with transmission shift paddles find their home in the cabin.

The automaker has kept the X1's five-passenger seating arrangement for the 2023 model year. X1's seats have been newly developed for the model and show off tailored looks that are designed to offer additional comfort on extended trips.

The seats are only offered with SenseTec upholstery in Oyster, Red/Black bi-color, Mocha or Black.

The rear seat features a 40-20-40 split and can be folded to extend the cargo area.

A roller shade for the car's sunroof is available.

BMW has installed its Curved Display on the dashboard placing the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and 10.7-inch infotainment screen under one housing. Bluetooth, four USB-C ports and two 12-volt power outlets (one in the front and one in the back) are standard.

Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Google Assistant, and WhatsApp can be used via the car's infotainment system. Apple iPhones can be used as the vehicle's key

Below is the center console, which has space for a wireless smartphone charger, two cup holders, a toggle style gear selector and function buttons.

The car's navigation system uses augmented reality to point drivers in the correct direction when they get near a turn. Modern Mercedes-Benz technology does the same.

The X1 can be equipped with BMW's Driving Assistant Professional, a driver assist and safety system that utilizes various technologies to make driving for extended distances on highways less strenuous for the driver.

Driving Assistant Professional includes lane centering technology, adaptive cruise control with stop and go, and traffic jam assist, which allows hands-free driving at up to 40 miles per hour (mph). Speed limit monitoring, active while using adaptive cruise control, helps reduce the vehicle's speed, or increase it, ahead of a speed change.

Active park distance control and back-up assistant work to steer a vehicle during certain reversing activities and help avoid collisions.

If the vehicle's alarm system is triggered, the model's Remote Theft Recorder can record video images with the car's surround view cameras at the same time as alerting the owner via a push notification in the My BMW App.

Pricing for the model will be released closer to its on-sale date. The 2022 BMW X1 starts at $35,400 and the new X1 is expected to have similar pricing.
